it's Kanbaru again 🌟

had some thoughts after a friend told me they got blocked by the menswear guy* (they don't know why)

* this is a guy who exists on twitter in like the last year or something idk if anyone outside twitter knows who he is

Discord screenshot (transcript follows):

hikari 🌟 β€” Idag 15:09

it's a shame that he's a bit of a culture warrior
like
he's not a full-on culture warrior
but
it dilutes his message
and it's a shame because he has such an interesting mind

[redacted] β€” Idag 15:09
yeah

hikari 🌟 β€” Idag 15:11
he gives off a bit of a vibe of being personally torn about his inability to separate the prescriptive and descriptive

[redacted] β€” Idag 15:11
yes. 100%

hikari 🌟 β€” Idag 15:11
because you know, he always wants to just educate on the language of clothing etc
but then he's
explicitly
said
that he only picks on people he already doesn't like
i wonder if this, too, is menswear forum trauma

[redacted] β€” Idag 15:12
lmao

hikari 🌟 β€” Idag 15:12
it's genuinely very fitting for someone of his discipline
menswear may have all this beauty to it
but it is also
Dripping
in class warfare implications
that even he is not managing to escape, even though he is more big-brained about it than most

@hikari the thing that gets me is that the milquetoast critique boils down to "you're nouveau riche!" a good 90% of the time

@tef hahahaha oh my god you're right

tef

(replying to tef)

@hikari sure enough, it isn't the usual critique of right wingers, calling people ugly, suggesting that they're gay, or saying their body is misshapen

but at the same time it feels bizarrely toothless "aha you aren't obeying this arbitrary set of rules i have invented. look at this rich person who didn't buy the right accessories"

it feels like someone's trying to catch a gangster on tax fraud, and failing

@tef he's playing a game against people who aren't playing the same game as he is. like liberals pointing out contradictions in fash arguments.

@hikari @tef I think everyone is playing the game to some extent he’s just really into it to the extent that most people don’t care or know about

@hikari @tef It’d be like, I don’t know, if a guy decided to spend all his time finding weird bugs and performance problems in people’s software. It would have a wide audience but it’s fundamentally kind of lonely and sad because it’s not like it’s doing much in the long run

@hikari @tef Part of the schtick is the novelty of being β€œgood” while the target is supposed to β€œknow better” or whatever. Where it gets weird is that he doesn’t quite always punch up but also punches sideways towards people who mostly kind of suck

tef

(replying to it's Kanbaru again 🌟)

@hikari he is also kinda funny to be fair but yeah i can't shake the classist vibes

it's Kanbaru again 🌟

(replying to tef)

@tef that's what makes it so sad! it's like, dude, you clearly are halfway to embracing the beauty of all things, but you're held back by your own judgmentalness

ok i have been fucking bodied by a friend on the fediverse pointing out that half his criticisms are just that someone is nouveau riche. oh my god i was right. it WAS just a class thing, i just couldn't see it. lmao

oh, so when i type on discord i tend to deliver pauses in speech by separating them into separate messages? so my usage of periods and elipsis and so on in tweets is literally a representation of the rhythm of speech? that's kinda cool

@hikari we've seen people remark on the different usage patterns of people who grew up having vs not having typing indications

(replying to R)

@r @hikari tangentally related, reminds me of how some prefer splitting conversations into many channels/chats vs dealing with multiple conversations in parallel in one chatroom

the kinda habits/preferences/skills one builds from what boils down to (essentially) technical limitations is fascinating

R

(replying to πŸ—¦newπŸ—§ FireFly)

@firefly @hikari yeah, we find the "new generation" of chat apps with multiple subchannels and hidden reply threads unusable

(replying to R)

@r @firefly i think i'm pretty ambidextrous and manage to handle all of these spaces but there's kind of an extreme case of each that's really insufferable
