@hikari i keep on getting hit by this one any time one of my monolingual relatives asks me "so how's your german coming on?" as if this question is in any way well formed and makes any sense

@hikari nah, they know that. it's more that they don't really understand how one lives and breathes a second language when you're properly immersed, and that on the continent speaking more than one language is really nowhere near as remarkable as it is in the uk

@timezone oh, yeah. it was like that for me with swedish, beyond a certain point it learns itself and i didn't have a reason to touch any study materials

@timezone i just read and watch the news. i never put any specific effort whatsoever into learning the language of political discourse, it comes automatically from reading about politics
