@hikari@social.noyu.me I wonder about that myself. It's not that the venue got any bigger, so I have a few theories:

1. The "vocal minority" of people who decided not to participate in mass events in a post-2020 world is neither as vocal nor as minor as previously expected, particularly in the hacker/neurodivergent world which was always a big part of C3 and was perhaps among the groups most invested in COVID avoidance.
2. After three years, people got out of habit and/or are sitting this one out to see what the event will be like after this break.
3. Too many people got other plans already, the announcement was made in early October and it wasn't 100% certain if a physical C3 would take place this year for quite some time.

@asie in fact the venue got smaller, so it does suggest a big shrink in attendance if tickets are less scarce than normal

@hikari@social.noyu.me I'm personally in category 1. I can't really get over the pandemic anxiety, especially since when I finally did in February 2023 I caught COVID on the very first event I went to...

@asie yeah it's quite understandable. i've had pretty good luck so far, but i haven't gone to any β€œevents”, so…

@asie (3) is something i hadn't thought much about, but i should have. it had also seemed like 37c3 was going to happen last year but then they seemingly cancelled it late for reasons that, as an outsider, were unintelligible, and that might have given people pause before taking them seriously this year

@hikari@social.noyu.me As far as I know the cancellation reason was (1)? Even for this year's C3 there's a small group of dissenters within CCC who are organizing a remote talk conference at the same time as the "physical" 37C3.

@asie yeah i can only assume that was what was going on

@asie @hikari Butting in, announcement really felt rushed. I got information that my talk was accepted in the beginning of December which really doesn't give you a lot of time to sort the information into something coherent and make slides.

Because of that I had to drop all projects I've been working on and focus solely on preparing the talk, and yesterday I almost had a panic attack realising I have less than two weeks to finish it. I'm still roughly 40% done.

@elly @asie good luck!
